Dan Putnam
Raising High Quality AlfalfaDr. Daniel H. Putnam, University of California, Davis, California Dan Putnam specializes in alfalfa and forage crops systems, forage quality and utilization, alternative field crops, cellulosic energy crops (switchgrass, miscanthus) crop ecology. Cooperative Extension Specialist and Experiment Station Scientist at UC Davis for alfalfa and forage cropping systems, and Chair, UC Alfalfa Workgroup. This position entails statewide responsibility for extension and research activities related to alfalfa and forage crops. Forages occupy about 1.8 million acres in California, the most prominent of which is alfalfa, worth about $1 billion/year. Conducts educational activities (field days, symposia, newsletters, websites) pertaining to forage crops. Conducts field and laboratory research related to alfalfa and harvested forage crops. Works closely with CE Farm Advisors in the counties, with UC scientists, and with the alfalfa industry in California. Currently chair of the California Alfalfa Symposium, and past president of the National Forage Testing Association. Other interests include introduction of new crop species, crop ecology, and forage quality analysis methods.

The Importance of Stem to Leaf RatioDirector of Product Development, Alforex Seeds Don Miller is currently the director of Product Development for Alforex Seeds and is based out of Nampa, Idaho. During his 35-year career in the public and private industry, Miller has authored or co-authored numerous agricultural publications and conducted 300 plus training seminars for universities and grower organizations. Miller has developed or co-developed 150 alfalfa, six red clover and one Teff variety during his plant breeding career. He is a past president of the Western Society of Crop Science; the Western Alfalfa Improvement Conference and has served two 4-year terms on the National Alfalfa Variety Review Board. As director of Product Development, Miller has been deeply involved with the development of the Alforex alfalfas with the Salinity and Hi-Gest Low Lignin technologies, as well as their adaption by progressive growers all across the U.S.

Weed Control in AlfalfaAssistant Professor & Weed Management Specialist, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Dr. Lawrence directs the weed management research and extension program for the Panhandle region of Nebraska. His research and extension focus is the development of weed management programs that leverage crop rotations and other cultural practices to supplement the sometimes limited weed control options available in Western Nebraska. Nevin research’s weed control in dry bean, sunflower, sugarbeet, corn, soybean, and alfalfa. Specific projects include measuring the impact of narrow–row and direct-harvest dry bean production on weed communities, controlling herbicide-resistant kochia and pigweed species using multi-year integrated management plans, and determining the influence of climate on weed abundance and management. Non-crop research and extension projects include the evaluation of novel weed control products for control of downy brome in rangeland. Dr. Lawrence began his current position in Nebraska in 2016. Prior, he earned his Ph.D from Washington State University in, where he researched cheatgrass biology and interference in wheat. Dr. Lawrence received a M.S. and B.S from the University of Wyoming where he studied weed community response to glyphosate-resistant crops. Dr. Lawrence is originally from Central Wyoming.

Making High Quality Hay with SteamSpencer Douglas lives and works in Cedar City, Utah. He holds bachelors and masters degrees in accounting from Southern Utah University, and worked in public accounting until he joined Staheli West as its first employee in 2010. Spencer has a lifelong passion for agriculture, having grown up working on his family’s farm, and his love of farming has made him a passionate contributor to Staheli West. He has played an instrumental role in many areas of the company’s development, including accounting and business management, machine fabrication, marketing, and sales. Spencer’s knowledge and experience in hay and forage have contributed to his expert understanding of the Dewpoint and the many ways it can benefit farmers. In his free time, Spencer loves to ride dirtbikes, work on the farm, and spend time with his wife and six children.
